Stage East's New Year's Eve production of "Jest Desserts" was graced by a visit from its author, Rich Orloff, who offered to waive royalties for the production, instead asking to be brought to Eastport to see the show. Orloff commented about his experience:
"I was looking forward to my visit to Moose Island, mostly as a break from the many stresses of work and life in New York City. As I've seen a lot of bad community theater productions of my plays, I confess I didn't expect to like the Stage East's production of JEST DESSERTS nearly as much as I did. Furthermore, JEST DESSERTS only had two previous productions, both in high schools, and so I really wasn't sure if the play would be well-received. I was quickly charmed by the cast, aided by Brian's witty and skillful direction. But I don't write plays for me; I write shows like JEST DESSERTS to entertain. I wasn't prepared for audiences to respond as enthusiastically as they did! It was a thrill to hear hearty laughter over and over, and to sense the fun the audiences was having. So I not only had a great time during the show, I left motivated to let other theaters know what a good time they could have with the play. So I owe Brian, Stage East, and your audiences a lot. Playwrights need such experiences to stay inspired."—Rich Orloff |
